Game Over: State Duma Announces Bill to Protect Children from Destructive Content in Video Games

The document will be presented in January 2025

Russia is preparing measures aimed at banning video games that promote values alien to Russians and contain destructive content.

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin reported that complaints are being received about video games that contain elements of aggression, violence, and propaganda that contradict Russian values. In this regard, in January 2025, the Russian authorities may decide to protect citizens, especially minors, from the corresponding destructive content.

However, the details of the upcoming restrictions were not disclosed. He emphasized the importance of making a decision in favor of protecting young people from such materials.

In March 2024, the State Duma discussed similar issues regarding the protection of young people from destructive content in social media, where the expansion of opportunities to block unwanted content was also discussed.

In December 2023, it became known that a group of deputies and senators had prepared a bill that would oblige digital platforms to inform users about the content of video games. In addition, it is proposed to oblige game publishers to identify players via a mobile number or through the "Gosuslugi" portal. Such initiatives have already provoked criticism in the market, as they may be perceived as excessive.
