Trusting Elderly Russians Increasingly Becoming Victims of Fraudsters

Elderly people are increasingly facing fraud related to the configuration of television set-top boxes. This was reported by Sergei Gavrilov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Property, Land and Property Relations.

Criminals skillfully exploit the trust and lack of technical awareness of the older generation.

According to the deputy, fraudsters are using a new scam strategy. They pose as technicians for repairing or configuring equipment and get more money from elderly people than promised.

Fraudsters use various tricks, including pre-prepared documents and acts of completed work. This creates an illusion of legality for the victim.

According to the parliamentarian, it is not easy to combat such fraudsters, as they formally operate within the law. For example, they can register as self-employed, provide documents on completed work, and even pay taxes. This complicates the qualification of their actions as fraud, since there is no obvious deception in the eyes of the law.

Earlier, fraudsters came up with a new way to deceive Russians. Now they send messages in messengers and to email addresses on behalf of law enforcement officials demanding that they appear in court, law enforcement, or tax authorities. These false summonses are accompanied by messages with links that supposedly need to be followed under various pretexts.
