Some Visa and Mastercard cards have expired security certificates: what this means

The problem will affect less than 1% of the entire terminal network

From January 1, 2025, the security certificates of some cards of international payment systems Visa and Mastercard ceased to be valid. Such cards may stop working in some POS terminals and ATMs, but transactions on them will be available.

The Central Bank of Russia, together with the National Payment Card System and credit institutions, took measures in advance to ensure the smooth operation of cards.

As an unnamed representative of the NSPK told RBC, at the end of October the company provided banks with instructions on how to change the technical parameters so that cards of international payment systems with an expired or overdue security certificate continue to work. According to him, many financial organizations have already implemented these tips in their work, and their systems successfully process such cards. However, some market participants may have nuances in the operation of some terminals.

The problem will affect less than 1% of the entire network of terminals, an unnamed representative of the Central Bank specified to RBC. In cases where Visa and Mastercard cards cannot be accepted by ATMs, banks will solve problems, for example, by configuring equipment or promptly replacing devices.

Earlier, information appeared that some ATMs of T-Bank may stop accepting Visa and Mastercard cards from January 1, 2025. The reason was the decision of international payment systems to leave Russia. However, the bank denied this information, stating that the credit organization's terminals are functioning smoothly and were updated in a timely manner.
