The Philippine Navy detected the presence of a Russian Kilo-class submarine (as NATO calls the Project Varshavyanka submarines) "Ufa" in the South China Sea. The submarine was discovered approximately 148 kilometers off the coast of Western Mindoro. This is reported by Army Recognition.
The incident occurred in late November. The Philippine frigate "Jose Rizal" tracked the movements of "Ufa."
The Russian Kilo-class submarine confirmed its identity and reported that it was waiting for favorable weather conditions before heading to its base in Vladivostok. Its appearance caused concern among the Philippine authorities.
According to Army Recognition, the Kilo-class submarine is one of the most modern and stealthy diesel-electric submarines. It has been a key asset of the Russian Navy since the 1980s.
