Tomsk State University of Architecture and Construction (TSUAB) has developed a technology to reduce the cost of building construction in the northern regions of Russia, the university's press service reported.
Deformation and destruction of existing structures are caused by permafrost thaw. To solve this problem, researchers proposed using special aprons and "cushions" up to 40 centimeters thick. They will provide reliable thermal insulation and protection of pavements and pile-columns.
The weight of one "cushion" — 10-15 kilograms. This makes it easy to move them even for a small number of workers.
In winter, the "cushions" are raised under the ceiling, which reduces heat flow. During this time, the soil accumulates the necessary supply of cold. At the end of April, they are lowered back under the foundation of the house. This cycle is repeated annually, preventing the thawing of the frozen base of the house.
Currently, work is underway to implement the technology at an experimental level in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District. A patent has already been obtained for the thermal insulation system.
