A rare modification of the Grad multiple launch rocket system from the Tula NPO Splav has been spotted on the front line. This is a lightweight modification of the 9K55 Grad-1, which entered service in 1976 and was produced in a series of 500 units, compared to 8,500 units of the standard 9K51 Grad MLRS.
Military expert Evgeny Damantsev noted that the difference from the classic Grad with 40 transport and launch guides is that the 9K51 Grad-1 system has 36 transport and launch cells located on the chassis of a medium-tonnage ZiL-131 truck. In combat position, the launch mass of the Grad-1 was reduced to 11,500 kg, compared to 13,700 kg for the 9K51 Grad.
Structurally, these guides are adapted to the use of advanced 122-mm long-range unguided rockets 9M521 and 9M522 with a range of 40 and 37.5 km, respectively. As you know, these NURS are the basis of the ammunition load of the latest Tornado-G MLRS.
Another advantage of the Grad-1 system is the reduced longitudinal channels of the guides above the surface in a horizontal position, which facilitates and speeds up the process of reloading ammunition.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that Rostec increased production of ammunition tenfold, and artillery shells sixfold.
