Allows data transmission over long distances with minimal loss: a method for optimizing the operation of fiber lasers has been developed in Moscow

Technology will increase the efficiency of communication systems

The National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University) has created a method for calculating the optimal parameters of erbium-doped fiber lasers. The development will increase the efficiency of high-speed communication systems and optical technologies, the university's press service reported.

We have determined that the dependencies we have calculated are universal for erbium lasers with significantly different core compositions of the active optical fiber, length, and resonator Q-factor. The results will allow us to predict the generation parameters of erbium fiber lasers and optimize their operation for various tasks.
Alexander Smirnov, Professor at HSE University

The researchers studied the generation of laser radiation in optical fiber containing erbium ions. The wavelength of the lasers is about 1.5 micrometers. This allows data to be transmitted over long distances with minimal loss and to create high-precision optical sensors.

The scientists studied for the first time the effect of changing the concentration of erbium ions in the range from 0.03% to 0.3% on the laser operation mode. The experiments made it possible to determine the optimal concentrations of ions of this rare-earth metal and to select a laser design in which it is possible to achieve compactness of the device while maintaining a continuous mode of infrared radiation generation.

It is expected that the research results will help fiber laser manufacturers in developing optimal emitter designs. This will improve the quality of high-speed communication systems and create more accurate optical sensors and detectors.
