Snow and dirt on license plates are now considered devices for concealing them

The State Traffic Inspectorate of Russia announced that snow and dirt on car license plates will be considered a device for concealing them, which may lead to deprivation of rights for up to one and a half years. This information is based on recently adopted amendments to the law.

According to the new rules, driving without license plates or concealing them with various materials is punishable by a fine of up to 5,000 rubles. For a repeated violation, the driver may lose their rights for up to 1.5 years. Materials used to conceal license plates include paper, fabric, dirt, and snow. However, in order to deprive a driver of their rights for a repeated violation, it must be obvious that the concealment of the license plate was done intentionally, and not due to weather conditions or driving conditions.

The President of the Russian Federation previously signed a law on stricter punishment for the use of devices that interfere with the recognition of license plates on vehicles. In accordance with the new federal law of October 14, 2024 No. 342-FZ, the penalties have also changed.

Previously, driving without license plates or with altered license plates was punishable by a fine of up to 5,000 rubles or deprivation of rights for a period of 1 to 3 months. Now, for using devices to conceal license plates, the driver faces deprivation of rights for a period of 1 to 1.5 years with confiscation of such devices, for example, frames or electromagnets.
