The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), known as the operator of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), has announced the termination of cooperation with Russian scientists. Their access to all facilities of the organization will be restricted from the beginning of December this year. This was reported by the scientific publication Nature.
From December 1, 2024, all researchers associated with Russia will have to renounce their Swiss and French residence permits and will also lose the opportunity to work on the territory of CERN. If they wish to continue working, scientists will have to sever ties with Russian institutions and move to foreign institutions.
It is worth noting that CERN will continue to work with Russian scientists from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, who conduct experiments on the NICA collider in Dubna.
According to Nature's estimates, contributions from Russian institutions and foundations accounted for about 4.5% of the budget for experiments at the LHC. The loss of such a contribution will lead to CERN losing an additional $47 million as early as 2029.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that Putin explained the potential of the collider near Moscow.
