Russia and India are jointly planning to modernize 2,500 T-72 tanks that are in service with the Indian army. After that, the military equipment will be sent to Africa and the Middle East, Indian Defence News writes, citing a representative of the country's Ministry of Defense.
T-72
Production of the T-72 in India began in the eighties at a factory in Avadi. At the same time, about 500 tanks were purchased from the USSR. In the 2000s, the company began producing modernized T-90s.
According to Indian Defence News, if the T-72 modernization program is successful, it will be extended to IFVs. In this way, India will diversify its fleet of military equipment and be able to earn money from its resale.
