India, with Russia's help, to modernize 2,500 T-72 tanks for subsequent sale

India is diversifying its military equipment fleet

Russia and India are jointly planning to modernize 2,500 T-72 tanks that are in service with the Indian army. After that, the military equipment will be sent to Africa and the Middle East, writes Indian Defence News, citing a representative of the country's Ministry of Defense.

Тanks T-72 are considered one of the most reliable in the world, and the demand for them remains high. African and Middle Eastern states would like to strengthen their defense capabilities with their help.

Production of T-72 in India began in the eighties at a factory in Avadi. At the same time, about 500 tanks were purchased from the USSR. In the 2000s, the company began producing modernized T-90s.

According to Indian Defence News, if the T-72 modernization program is successful, it will be extended to IFVs. In this way, India will diversify its fleet of military equipment and be able to earn money from its resale.
