Several Chinese companies have applied to use the Northern Sea Route (NSR) during the 2024 navigation period, indicating a significant increase in interest in the route compared to last year, when there was only one Chinese shipper.
Sergey Zybko, General Director of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "GlavSevmorput", speaking at the "Arctic - Regions" forum in Arkhangelsk, emphasized the importance of predictability in shipping. He noted that operators, shippers, and recipients should have a clear understanding of the transit time along the NSR in each month of the year, for example, on the route from Shanghai to St. Petersburg.
Zybko also pointed out that the duration of the journey along the NSR varies depending on the time of year, and this variability requires precise planning from all participants in the logistics chain. Solving this problem is one of the key challenges for the industry.
In addition, in July 2024, Rosatom State Corporation launched a new rail-sea route to China via the NSR, which was named "NSR Express No. 1." This multimodal transport corridor aims to improve logistics between Russia and China.
