Moscow is actively implementing and testing innovative technologies to improve road safety. As part of this initiative, more than 60,000 traffic lights, 3,800 photo and video recording cameras, over 800 displays, and 3,900 motion sensors have been installed. All these devices are integrated into the intelligent transport system of the Traffic Management Center (TsODD), which allows monitoring the road situation in real time.
One of the main innovations is traffic lights that warn pedestrians about approaching cars at pedestrian crossings. These traffic lights are being tested at five locations and, if the experiment is successful, will be installed in areas with a high risk of accidents.
Moscow is also introducing traffic lights with a combined phase. In such devices, the white signal with the image of a pedestrian and a turning arrow has been moved to the yellow light section, which allows drivers to better perceive the signals and be more attentive when turning.
The intelligent transport system helps regulate traffic and ensure maximum throughput and safety on the roads.
The system operates in three modes:
- Local mode. Traffic lights operate according to a pre-programmed scenario, independently of each other, for example, during peak hours in the morning and evening.
- Coordinated control. Traffic lights work synchronously to optimize traffic and maintain intensity in sections, especially on highways.
- Adaptive mode. Traffic lights independently adapt to the current road situation, receiving data from induction loops or sensors embedded in the asphalt at the intersection. Moscow already has 600 smart intersections operating in this mode.
Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport Maxim Liksutov noted that the use of these technologies helps prevent accidents and increases safety on the streets for all road users. All equipment for traffic lights is of domestic production, which emphasizes the importance of supporting local manufacturers and technologies.
It is expected that the introduction of intelligent control systems and new traffic light formats are important steps towards reducing accidents and improving safety on Moscow roads.
