A technology for creating flame-retardant paper and cardboard has been developed at Yaroslav the Wise Novgorod State University (NovSU). This was reported by the university's press service.
The technology uses a chemical compound called flame retardant. When exposed to fire, it reduces the burning rate and leads to a decrease in the ignition temperature. Due to this, the material acquires flame-retardant properties.
The developed technology will allow the production of flame-retardant paper, cardboard, gypsum board, and other materials of various thicknesses, depending on the customer's needs, while maintaining the physical and operational properties of the paper. This will be a product consisting of a specially selected proportion of shredded recycled paper - waste paper, as well as a flame retardant.
According to the project author Elizaveta Shcherbinina, the new materials can be used in the construction of various public institutions where the risk of fire is high. The cost of flame-retardant materials from the aforementioned development will not be high.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that an aerodynamic tunnel for modeling explosions and fires was developed in Yekaterinburg.
