Russia's Second Major Project in Turkey: Rosatom Plans to Build the Sinop NPP

Likhachev: Russia is Expanding Cooperation with Turkey in the Field of Nuclear Energy

The head of the state corporation (GC) Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, discussed cooperation with the Minister of Energy of Turkey, Alparslan Bayraktar. The meeting took place in Istanbul, the corporation's press service reported.

The parties discussed the implementation of the Russian-Turkish Akkuyu NPP project, as well as possible prospects for expanding cooperation.

Regarding the Akkuyu NPP and its current status: the main efforts are focused on preparing for the launch of the first power unit – we are actively conducting full-scale commissioning works, and at the current stage, we are preparing the reactor plant for loading fuel simulators.

He emphasized that it is important for the Turkish authorities to launch nuclear electricity into the country's energy system.

The head of the Turkish Ministry of Energy added that Rosatom specialists and local nuclear scientists are trying to put the first power unit into operation as soon as possible. At the same time, the construction of three other power units is underway.

When all four power units are launched, the Akkuyu NPP will provide 10% of Turkey's electricity needs. Likhachev and Bayraktar also discussed the possibility of Rosatom implementing the construction project of the second Sinop NPP.
