A system for finding people based on Wi-Fi has been created at the Siberian State University of Telecommunications and Informatics (SibGUTI). This was reported by the university's press service.
The software is designed to detect mobile devices using Wi-Fi. While mobile networks cannot be used inside buildings, the satellite signal allows you to determine the location of a user's smartphone with an accuracy of 5-7 meters, regardless of obstacles.
The system can be used for search operations inside buildings, mines and underground premises, parental control of schoolchildren, assistance in orientation inside large buildings, in particular for people with disabilities.
The software determines the parameters of Wi-Fi network access points and the signal level from these points to the search object. The search is based on the trilateration method (uses the distances between known points to determine the coordinates of an unknown point). The program collects information, sends it to the server and receives the coordinates of the object. The more Wi-Fi points around, the better the final result.
The problem with accurately determining the location indoors is that the signal from GLONASS or GPS satellites is very weak here. And according to signals from mobile network base stations, the accuracy of the determination is very rough - up to 300-500 meters. Naturally, a different accuracy is needed indoors - usually no worse than 5-7 meters.
At the moment, the developers are debugging the tracking algorithm. This will allow tracking objects in the process of moving indoors. The new software will compete with foreign analogues.
The system has been tested in one of the schools in Novosibirsk. In the future, parents will be able to use it to track the location of their children.
Earlier www1.ru reported that the Ministry of Digital Development denied the use of the Unified Biometric System for searching for people.
