«Росатом» будет строить с Китаем суда высокого ледового класса

The parties will also organize year-round international transportation along the Northern Sea Route

During the SPIEF, Rosatom State Corporation signed an agreement with the Chinese shipping company Hainan Yangpu NewNew Shipping Co. Ltd to establish a joint venture for the construction of high ice class vessels. The parties also agreed on the organization of year-round international transportation along the Northern Sea Route (NSR).

For us, the NSR is a mission, a mission of our era, of our country. We see the Northern Sea Route as a route with high economic returns. In recent years, with the increase in trade between Russia and China, our activities in this area have also been developing. We have high hopes for this route, and in the near future we plan to develop new projects and technological solutions to increase the volume of traffic between Russia and China.
Fan Yuxin, Chairman of Hainan Yangpu NewNew Shipping Co. Ltd

Earlier in March 2024, representatives of "Rosatom" announced that 160 high ice class vessels would be needed for the NSR by 2030. At the same time, there is a shortage of such vessels: 30 vessels operate on the Northern Sea Route, and Russian shipbuilders are currently building only 33 more.

"Rosatom" received the status of infrastructure operator of the Northern Sea Route from the Russian government in 2018. In December 2019, the Cabinet approved the NSR infrastructure development plan until 2035, developed by "Rosatom", and on August 1, 2022, the Northern Sea Route development plan until 2035 was approved.

One of the strategic goals of "Rosatom" is to make the NSR an effective transport artery connecting Europe, Russia and the Asia-Pacific region.
