SPb FRC RAS Develops Wireless Power Transfer System

Employees of the St. Petersburg Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPb FRC RAS) have created a prototype wireless power transfer system for robots of various purposes. Scientists expect it to be in demand in geological exploration and monitoring of water bodies.

According to Konstantin Krestovnikov, a junior researcher at SPb FRC RAS, recharging underwater robots with this system will increase the level of automation.

The system charges robots at a charging station or allows robots to exchange energy within a group

The development of SPb FRC RAS consists of two parts:

  • transmitting
  • receiving

Its important element is an energy transfer control module that integrates with the robot's control system. Energy is transferred through the method of electromagnetic induction.

The 400 W power transmitter and receiver (on the robot) can be 6-7 cm apart. The transfer efficiency is 85%.
