At Novosibirsk State University, the first computing cluster of the Lavrentiev Supercomputer Center (SCC) is preparing to launch by the summer of 2024. The cluster's power will exceed 200 teraflops (trillions of floating-point operations per second).
The cluster will enable NSU scientists to work with large language models and AI, as well as solve research and applied problems, including those for companies in the real sector.
The equipment available at the university only allows us to work with simple language models, which are 2-3 levels below Chat GPT. The new machine will allow us to work with larger language models and train them quickly. This way, we will be able to work with the most modern projects.
Such large language models can be applied in several areas, in particular:
- for the Internet of Things and "smart city" technologies;
- for creating and transferring AI models to applications for specific tasks on smartphones, video cameras, and other portable devices. For example, for chatbots, voice assistants, video analytics;
- in robotics - for creating multimodal models, where the robot will "hear", "see", and analyze the information received to optimally perform the assigned task.
SCC "Lavrentiev"
A supercomputer center with a maximum computing power of 10 petaflops (quadrillions of floating-point operations per second). It is planned to be launched in 2026 at the NSU campus, which is currently under construction as part of the national project "Science and Universities."
The SCC "Lavrentiev" is focused on solving problems related to artificial intelligence. It will be able to perform many parallel calculations, which are done on specific types of accelerators.
The center will be available to all specialists who need to process large scientific data. In addition, the SCC "Lavrentiev" will be able to solve problems using big data (another accepted name for them - big data, - editor's note) in the fields of security, office management, industrial production, agriculture, and mining.
Earlier, "The First Technical"wrote about preparations for the launch of Russia's first contract manufacturing of superconducting quantum processors for supercomputers.
