Rosoboronexport announced the introduction of artificial intelligence, performing the functions of a "second pilot", into the Su-57 fighter to attract the attention of potential buyers. This opinion was expressed by military expert Peter Suchiu in an article for The National Interest.
The export version of the Su-57 will also receive a virtual "second pilot". The function will increase the capabilities of the pilot, "however, questions remain," Suchiu emphasized.
The virtual pilot has been a key component of the Su-57 since the development of the early version of the fighter. But it is unclear how the hardware and software have been upgraded, given the rapid development of large language models and generative AI.
Suchiu recalled the problems with the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II when updating the Technology Refresh-3 (TR-3) software. Despite the fact that this is the most advanced fifth-generation fighter, its deliveries were suspended for a year due to difficulties with the new software.
Given Western sanctions, it is hard to imagine that Russian aircraft manufacturers will be able to update software and keep up with advances in computer technology.
Rosoboronexport brought the Su-27E to the LIMA-2025 exhibition in Malaysia. Prior to that, it demonstrated the aircraft in Egypt, China and India.
UAC has been trying to find foreign buyers, but so far they have not succeeded. By focusing on AI, Russia will likely be able to close deals.
