The newest TOS-3 "Dragon" flamethrower system will soon enter service with the Russian army. Military expert Yevgeny Damantsev pointed out the advantages of the complex.
The "Dragon" will receive an 18-round transport and launch module in an armored casing on the chassis of a gas turbine tank T-80BVM, as well as a chassis from a T-72B or T-90A tank.
Thanks to this, the TOS-3 crew will be able to quickly move to firing positions, as well as leave them to avoid being hit by enemy counter-battery fire. The steel armored casing will protect the "Dragon" cassette with rockets from fragmentation effects, as well as fire from 7.62-mm and 12.7-mm machine guns.
The upper frontal part of the chassis will have an equivalent resistance to armor-piercing projectiles of 650-700 mm and to cumulative projectiles - up to 1100 mm, characteristic of the T-80BVM.
The combat compartment will receive a promising information field based on terminals for exchanging tactical information and target distribution with other vehicles in the battery, as well as other fire weapons and control points of UAVs of optoelectronic reconnaissance to obtain operational target designation.
The vehicle's ammunition load will be represented by promising unguided TBS-3M rockets with a range of 15 km. They will allow conducting fire operations outside the radii of fire impact of 120-mm enemy mortars and most types of anti-tank missile systems.
