Russian BMP-3M infantry fighting vehicles have insufficient side protection, with a 43mm ABT-102 aluminum armor plate that is vulnerable to monolithic and tandem shaped-charge warheads with penetration exceeding 450mm. Lattice anti-cumulative screens with additional 10mm armor plates are unable to solve the problem, noted military analyst Evgeny Damantsev.
According to him, after a hit from a projectile with penetration exceeding 450mm, the shaped-charge jet does not fully defocus. It overcomes the ABT-102 plate, penetrates the behind-armor space, and initiates the detonation of the ammunition.
Therefore, the side projection can only be reliably covered by elements of dynamic protection (DZ) "Kaktus" or elements of DZ "Relikt".
The BMP-3M is designed to transport personnel to the front lines, increase the armament, mobility, and protection of soldiers on the battlefield.
