Soviet T-55A medium tanks of the 1981 model continue to be successfully used in combat conditions as 100-mm self-propelled guns operating from closed positions. If necessary, combat vehicles are capable of performing the function of self-propelled anti-tank missile systems (ATGMs) with a range of 5500 m if upgraded to the T-55M/AM/AM-1 level.
The T-55A covers combat points with high-explosive fragmentation shells OF412Zh, ZOF32, and OF70. The firing range along a direct trajectory with an elevation angle of the D-10T2S rifled gun at +18 degrees can reach 14500 m.
The similar muzzle energy of this 56-caliber rifled gun in counter-battery duels makes it noticeably preferable to the 100-mm low-ballistic rifled guns 2A70 used on BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles and BMD-4M armored personnel carriers.
The combat vehicle is equipped with a KDT-2 (1D16) laser rangefinder, thanks to which it can use the Bastion guided tank missile system from the Tula KBP.
Tactical and technical characteristics of the T-55A:
- Crew - 4 people (commander, mechanic-driver, loader, gunner)
- Combat weight - 37 t
- Engine - 4-stroke 12-cylinder diesel
- Engine power - 580 hp
- Maximum speed - 50 km/h
- Fuel capacity - 680 l
- Cruising range - 600 km
Since 1983, the tank has been equipped with a guided weapon system with laser beam guidance, a ballistic computer, and smoke grenade launchers.
