The Ministry of Defense has shown a video of the combat operation of the self-propelled artillery 120-mm installation 2S9 "Nona-S". It combines the properties of a howitzer, a gun and a mortar, the system was developed specifically for airborne units.
Two visors were installed on the gun: one above the rear of the hull, the second - above the turret. This device protects armored vehicles from munitions dropped from drones.
2S9 "Nona-S" fires a high-explosive fragmentation projectile at a distance of more than 8 km. Interestingly, "Nona" is not a proper name, but an abbreviation of the name "Newest gun of ground artillery".
"Nona" still has no analogues in the world. After several stages of modernization, it is a mortar, a gun and a howitzer in one. The "Nona" gun allows the use of any foreign 120-mm ammunition without any structural changes, for example, APCM from the French rifled mortar RT-61, the firing range of which is up to 17 km.
The ammunition load of the self-propelled artillery unit may include rocket-assisted projectiles with an engine capable of hitting targets at a range of up to 13 km, as well as Kitolov-2 guided missiles. They can be guided to the target using a laser, hitting the enemy's heavy equipment like a harpoon, in the most unprotected part from above.
In addition, the "Nona" arsenal includes conventional cumulative projectiles capable of penetrating up to 600 mm of armor, as well as all types of mines for rifled and smoothbore mortars.
