In 2025, Russian tourists can use several methods to pay for purchases abroad, despite the cessation of Visa and Mastercard cards. This was reported by experts and bank representatives.
The easiest option is cash. However, since 2022, Russians can export no more than 10 thousand dollars or the equivalent in another currency from the country.
Mir cards are still accepted in a number of countries, such as Abkhazia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Vietnam. But it is worth remembering that they may only be accepted in certain places, for example, in the VTB bank network in Armenia and Kazakhstan. In the future, the list of countries accepting Mir may expand. At the same time, the authorities of many states are behaving cautiously in this matter, fearing possible sanctions.
Russians can also use UnionPay cards from two banks — Asia-Pacific Bank and Russian Agricultural Bank, which operate in more than 160 countries. However, under pressure from sanctions, the number of credit organizations accepting these cards may decrease.
Another way is to obtain a card from a foreign bank. About 15% of Russians use this opportunity. Most often, such cards are opened in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, or Belarus. The service costs from 20 thousand to 50 thousand rubles.
Note that Russian bank terminals have appeared in Turkey, which allow the use of Mir cards. Payment via QR codes is also available in this country, which simplifies the payment process.
Thus, Russians have several options for paying for goods and services abroad. It is worth preparing for the trip in advance to avoid inconvenience.
