Spinal cord transplanted for the first time in Russia

The 12-hour operation was performed at the Sklifosovsky Institute with the participation of Chinese specialists

For the first time in Russia, a spinal cord transplant operation was performed in Moscow. Mayor Sergey Sobyanin announced the unique surgical intervention. The operation lasted 12 hours and took place at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine.

The patient was threatened with complete immobility, but after the intervention, he has a chance for recovery. According to Sobyanin, the man is now feeling well.

The operation was a continuation of Moscow's project for upper limb transplantation. The intervention was carried out with the participation of Chinese specialists as part of international cooperation and the transfer of medical technologies.

Moscow authorities note that metropolitan clinics are introducing modern treatment methods and adopting foreign experience. Details about the surgical technique used and the patient's recovery prognosis were not provided in the mayor's message.
