Satellites evade impact: Russia tracks space debris, but international cooperation is needed

Chief Designer of ASPOS OKP Elena Pavlova: orbital spacecraft evasion maneuvers have already occurred in practice

The system registers threats of orbital spacecraft colliding with space debris several times a year – and each time, the data is promptly transmitted to communication operators. Elena Pavlova, Chief Designer of the Automated System for Warning of Dangerous Situations in Near-Earth Space (ASPOS OKP), told TASS about this.

According to her, such events are recorded several times a year. All cataloged debris fragments are included in the calculation of possible close approaches with active spacecraft of the Russian orbital constellation. Roscosmos promptly communicates the calculation results to space system operators – they are the ones who make the final decision on the need for an evasion maneuver. Pavlova noted that such cases have indeed occurred in practice.

Specialists show high interest in solving the problem of space debris. However, according to the expert, a single clear course of action can only be achieved through cooperation between different countries – this task cannot be solved alone.
