Rostelecom may build an underwater cable to Hong Kong

Rostelecom is exploring the possibility of building an underwater fiber-optic communication line to Hong Kong. This was announced by the head of the company, Mikhail Oseevsky, to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin at the "Digital Solutions" forum.

According to him, the company plans to extend the Trans-Eurasian backbone TEA NEXT, launched on Tuesday, to Vladivostok. Currently, it connects the western and eastern borders of Russia with links to major cities and exits to the borders with Mongolia and China.

Oseevsky noted that the company is considering the possibility of an underwater cable to Hong Kong, where the largest international trans-Chinese route is located. He added that the shortest route from Europe to Asia passes through Russia, and this should be taken advantage of.
