The Rogun HPP in Tajikistan has reached a height of 190 meters — upon completion, the dam will become the tallest in the world, rising to 335 meters. Currently, the dam body is at an elevation of 1155 meters above sea level. A unique feature of the project is that the station is already generating electricity: two of the six planned hydro units are in operation.
The dam's design is rock-fill with a clay core. For construction, the Vakhsh River bed was diverted through underground tunnels. According to Webuild, more than half of the planned volume of materials for the dam body has already been placed, and the volume of drilling for foundation strengthening and the creation of a grouting curtain has exceeded 500 thousand linear meters.
The Russian company RusHydro is participating in the project: it provides engineering services and prepares working documentation for the station with an installed capacity of 3600 MW. Meanwhile, the construction work itself is carried out by the Tajik company TGEM and the Italian Webuild — they are implementing Lot-2 of the first stage. TGEM performs construction, electrical installation, and hydromechanical work at the facility.
As the water level in the reservoir rises, the available water volume and hydraulic head increase — this allows for an increase in the output of the operating turbines. After construction is completed, six hydro units of 600 MW each will operate at the station. Thanks to the Rogun HPP, Tajikistan expects to approximately double the country's electricity production.
For RusHydro, the Rogun HPP is one of the most significant international projects: it is specifically noted in the group's annual report for 2025. The company's portfolio includes 33 international projects in 12 countries with a total value of more than 4 billion rubles.
