Rostec announced the first DOKA RC5 operation on a human after tests on 36 animals

The cobot replicates the digital bioprinting model with an accuracy of at least 90%

Rostec announced the results of tests of a medical complex based on the DOKA RC5 collaborative robot. The system was tested on 36 animals with full-thickness skin defects, after which the cobot performed the first successful operation on a human patient.

The main problem with such a procedure is that the human body is constantly moving due to breathing, and the wound itself can have a complex relief. The robotic system takes these changes into account and maintains a set distance to the surface.

The complex was developed by NUST MISIS and 3D Bioprinting Solutions. The technology is being considered for the treatment of burns, trophic ulcers, and extensive soft tissue damage.

The robot applies a mesh with 0.6 mm cells. Moreover, it replicates the digital bioprinting model on a wet, uneven, and constantly moving surface with an accuracy of at least 90%.

During the tests, the system was applied to 36 animals with full-thickness skin defects. After four weeks, according to the developers, all animals recovered. The best results were shown by bio-inks with the animals' own cells — they accelerated blood vessel growth and the formation of more mature skin.

After animal testing, the cobot performed its first successful operation on a human patient. The operation of the complex, from the first to the last movement, was controlled by doctors, who found no deviations.

In the near future, the complex must undergo toxicological and clinical trials. After that, the device is planned to be registered as a medical product.
