QR payments do not negate the demand for Mir cards in Thailand, Russian Ambassador stated

Russians are already paying for purchases in the country through Sber, VTB, and MTS applications

The introduction of Mir cards in Thailand remains relevant, despite operational QR payments. Russian Ambassador Evgeny Tomikhin reminded TASS that the project was at an advanced stage before the pandemic, but sanitary restrictions interfered.

Currently, Russians can pay for goods and services via QR code through MTS Bank, Sber, and VTB applications. The Ambassador noted that the amount is instantly recalculated, and payment is made in rubles — which is most convenient for tourists. The Mir project has not been removed from the agenda until the parties decide that new solutions to the payment problem have emerged.

According to the Ministry of Tourism of Thailand, 1.9 million Russians visited the kingdom in 2025 — a record and fourth place among all national groups. Since the beginning of this year, more than 1.2 million have arrived. Russia remains the largest European market for Thailand.
