Loans for Billions: Ozon and Wildberries Banks Show Sharp Increase in Russians' Debt

In one month, the loan portfolio of "Wildberries Bank" grew by 88%, and the Central Bank will tighten restrictions from October

Banks of Russian marketplaces are rapidly increasing consumer lending. In August 2026, the loan portfolio of "Wildberries Bank" grew by 88% at once, "Ozon Bank" by 20%, and "Yandex Bank" by 9%. In terms of growth rates, they were among the leaders of the banking market.

Wildberries stands out especially, having almost doubled the volume of issued and not yet repaid loans in just one month. However, behind the impressive percentages lies an important nuance: the bank relatively recently began to develop consumer lending. Back in May, its portfolio was about 30 million rubles, and by the end of August, it approached 2.5 billion rubles. For the larger "Ozon Bank," the increase in one month reached 13 billion rubles, for "Yandex Bank" — 12 billion rubles.

At the same time, Russians began to take out loans more actively not only from marketplace banks. According to the Central Bank, in August, the total portfolio of unsecured consumer loans increased by more than 220 billion rubles, or 1.7%. In July, the growth was 1.1%. The largest contribution to the increase in the total volume of loans to individuals was made by Sberbank, whose portfolio added almost 210 billion rubles.

Experts explain the high growth rates of marketplace banks not only by the development of credit products but also by the relatively young age of their credit portfolios. Since loans are usually issued for three to five years, a significant part of clients is still repaying initial loans. As a result, new issuances quickly increase the total debt. At the same time, the growth of portfolios itself does not mean that borrowers have started to default more often.

However, from October 1, the situation may change. The Central Bank will tighten restrictions on the issuance of unsecured consumer loans, as well as individual loans secured by cars and real estate. According to Alexey Voylukov, an expert at RANEPA, lending will continue to grow, but the pace of new loan issuance may decrease.
