The Federal Medical-Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia has developed a multichannel electrical stimulation system for patients with spinal cord injuries and spinal cord damage. This was announced by the head of the agency, Veronika Skvortsova, at the "Hope for Technologies" forum. The system has already been created and is being tested on the first patients, with registration planned for the end of 2029.
The method allows for patient verticalization and the restoration of first an imposed step, and then training for independent movement. The FMBA already uses 16-channel functional electrical stimulation: impulses coincide with natural movement, creating a double stimulus for proper muscle function and reinforcing the pattern.
In February 2026, a DRG electrode was implanted for the first time in Russia in a patient with a lower limb amputation, which provided sensation in the phantom limb during walking. A prototype 12-channel prosthesis control system based on rheoelectromyography has also been created. Industrial partners are Motorika, Vysokiye Meditsinskiye Tekhnologii, Rosatom, and RezoniT.
