Russian engineers have developed a compact wind turbine designed to operate in extremely low winds — from 0.5 m/s. The first 350 W prototype has already passed tests, and now the developers are creating a more powerful version, the press service of the National Technology Initiative reported.
The new unit is planned to be brought to a power of 1–1.15 kW. In the future, the developers expect to get a 2 kW turbine.
One of the design features is that the rotor is held by magnets. Thanks to this, there is practically no contact friction in the mechanism, which should reduce wear and tear on parts and the need for maintenance.
Such a scheme is suitable for places where the wind is too weak or unstable for conventional small wind generators. The unit is planned to be used for autonomous power supply of weather stations, remote settlements, and industrial facilities.
