The Kurchatov Institute is working on a computer whose design is intended to mimic the principles of the human brain. This is not just about a software model: scientists want to reproduce neural connections directly in hardware.
According to Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute, such a system will become a “brain in hardware.”
At the first stage, this is a memristor network, a reproduction of a “brain in hardware.” And this computer is already becoming brain-like, anthropomorphic, or neuromorphic. And the next step is a computer with, as it were, living brain cells. This is already a biomachine.
In parallel, the institute is working on new microelectronics. One of the tasks is to combine operational and long-term memory. As part of a consortium with technology companies, according to Kovalchuk, they have already managed to create the corresponding technology and significantly reduce energy consumption.
Thus, the developers are considering several levels at once: from memory and artificial synapses to a computational system with biological elements.
