Former S-300 SAM commander and retired Colonel Igor Garnov revealed to “Pervy Tekhnichesky” new details of the GS-12 “Vilyui” concept — a stationary air defense system for large industrial facilities. The main feature of the complex is all-round operation and the ability to increase the number of radars and launchers around a single command post.
For comparison, the colonel points out the limitations of mobile Pantsir and Tor systems. The Vilyui launcher carries 90 missiles, while the Pantsir has up to 12 57E6 missiles. At the same time, Pantsir can simultaneously guide up to 4 SAMs, while Vilyui, according to Garnov's concept, can guide 40–80.
The complex is not actually one. Everything can be scaled up — an open architecture. One command post, one central computing complex of 4 supercomputers with hot redundancy, uninterruptible power supply. But there can be several multi-channel radars and launchers. Each launcher has 90 SAMs. If we move the launcher 5–8 km forward, the engagement zone — read coverage zone — increases by the same amount in that direction.
Launchers can be spaced 5–8 km apart, extending coverage in the desired direction. With a missile range of 10 km, one launcher, according to the concept developer, is capable of covering Ryazan.
According to the veteran air defense officer's idea, the radar station will operate continuously, and the debris of downed targets will fall into a predetermined area without damaging infrastructure.
