Fish will be sought using satellites and AI: Russia creates digital "Lotsiya"

The system daily shows the most promising fishing areas and helps vessels spend less time and fuel on searches

Russia has created the "Lotsiya" service, which uses artificial intelligence to help fishing vessels understand where to find fish today. Instead of viewing dozens of disparate maps, the crew receives a single image of the sea with zones where conditions are most suitable for a specific species.

To do this, the system combines satellite images, water temperature and salinity, currents, wind, waves, oxygen and chlorophyll content, depth, cloud cover, and even data on past catches. AI analyzes the combination of these factors and identifies areas that should be checked first.

Currently, "Lotsiya" is being tested for fishing of iwashi, saury, pollock, Pacific cod, and herring. For each species, season, and area, a separate model operates, which daily recalculates how suitable the environment remains at the required depth.

On the maps, you can see temperature boundaries, water mass movement, areas of deep water upwelling, and possible zones for the formation of a food base. Actual catches and vessel positions are also displayed there.

The developers emphasize that "Lotsiya" does not guarantee a catch and does not replace the captain or echo sounder. Its task is to narrow down the search area faster. The more accurately the area is chosen, the less time the vessel spends on reconnaissance, which means fuel consumption and fishing costs can be reduced.
