The Indian Air Force is facing a problem not so much with the MiG-29 itself, but with its weaponry lagging behind the capabilities of other Russian fighters. This is pointed out by the Indian publication IDRW, noting that after a major update of its onboard electronics and design, the aircraft still retains its previous set of R-77, R-27, and R-73 family air-to-air missiles.
The problem is particularly noticeable against the backdrop of the Su-30MKI, which has already received integration of the Indian Astra Mk1 missile. The Indian Ministry of Defence reported back in 2022 that Astra had fully completed integration with the Su-30MKI, after which a phased equipping of other combat aircraft was planned. Integration was also envisioned for carrier-based MiG-29s.
At the same time, the MiG-29 itself is not outdated in terms of its basic modernization level. Indian aircraft have received updated avionics, radar, electronic warfare systems, and expanded multi-role capabilities.
For the Indian Air Force, the issue has practical significance, as the MiG-29 will continue service for several more years and must fulfill tasks until a sufficient number of new fighters become available.
