Rostec publicly showcased for the first time in Egypt a new family of small-sized S-71 munitions for the Su-57 fighter jet. The S-71M "Monochrome" and S-71K "Kover" products combine features of attack drones and missile weapons, and their world premiere took place at the El Alamein International Airshow 2026.
The unusual format of the S-71 is primarily due to their purpose. A Rosoboronexport representative described the family as an intermediate option between a drone and a missile. At the same time, according to the Russian side, the new munitions have already been tested in combat conditions. Their concept is designed to provide a relatively inexpensive means of destruction that the Su-57 can carry both in internal compartments and on external hardpoints.
S-71M "Monochrome" belongs to loitering munitions. After launch from the aircraft, the operator can adjust its guidance to a moving target in real time, which allows the product to be used against mobile armored vehicles and personnel. Unlike a classic missile, this scheme makes it possible to select a target after the munition has reached the area of application.
S-71K "Kover" is designed for a different type of task and is positioned as a more affordable alternative to the Kh-69 air-launched cruise missile. The product has a compact wide body, folding wings, and a V-shaped tail, which makes it look more like a small drone than a traditional air-to-surface missile.
The appearance of the S-71 as part of the Su-57's armament expands the range of means by which the fighter can engage ground targets.
