Earth may be hit by two clouds of solar plasma in the coming days. Scientists expect their approach on September 8 and 9, with the first changes potentially starting as early as the evening of September 7. This was stated in a message from the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
On the night of September 8-9, the solar wind speed may increase to approximately 700 km/s – almost double the current values, experts explained. Along with this, prolonged geomagnetic disturbances are predicted, which will periodically intensify to G1 and G2 level magnetic storms – weak and moderate.
However, there is no basis yet to speak of a stronger storm. The laboratory assesses the probability of such a scenario as low. But the forecast may still change. If the Sun produces new plasma ejections, the calculations will have to be adjusted.
The current situation is associated with several ejections that have occurred on the Sun in recent days. Most of the plasma clouds will pass by Earth, but two or three, according to calculations, may reach our planet in the next two days.
