The modernized Yak-130M combat trainer aircraft is considered a light combat aircraft for most sub-Saharan African countries. Rosoboronexport believes that its capabilities and armament composition can meet the combat aviation needs of these states. This was stated by the company's CEO, Alexander Mikheev.

The Yak-130M is based on the Yak-130 and has enhanced combat capabilities. The aircraft is equipped with modern onboard equipment and a radar station, and its armament includes guided missiles and guided aerial bombs. This allows the aircraft to be used not only for pilot training but also for combat missions.
Tests of the modernized aircraft began with the first flight of the prototype in June 2026. The flight lasted about 50 minutes, and the aircraft reached an altitude of 2 thousand meters and a speed of 600 km/h.
Rostec previously noted that the Yak-130M is capable of performing tasks to engage ground and air targets, including heavy drones.
According to Rosoboronexport, interest in the Yak-130M from African air forces will primarily be due to the ability to acquire a light combat aircraft with modern armament without transitioning to heavier combat aircraft. The Yak-130 itself is already operated by a number of countries in Africa, Europe, and Asia, which creates a potential base of existing operators for the modernized version.
