Not just Akkuyu: Rosatom interested in building NPPs in Sinop and Thrace

Russia is interested in projects for the construction of nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Sinop and Thrace. This was stated by the head of the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar. He was quoted by the Turkish newspaper T24.

According to Bayraktar, Rosatom wants to use its human resources and experience gained at the Akkuyu NPP at new facilities. At the same time, the Turkish side is negotiating not only with Russia, but also with Canada, China, and South Korea.

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on September 1 in Bishkek. The talks touched upon the construction of new NPPs in Turkey after the completion of Akkuyu.

Currently, work is underway at the station to commission power unit No. 1. Bayraktar noted that the first reactor will start generating energy by the end of 2026. It will cover up to 2.5% of the country's electricity needs. After the completion of all 4 power units, the NPP will provide about 10% of Turkey's needs.
