Car reviewer Roman Shchukin, in his Telegram channel, debunked one of the most persistent technogenic myths — about “harmful radiation” in electric vehicles and hybrids. According to him, in the last two days, several people have asked him about this. As Shchukin explains, the electromagnetic field in the cabin is measured in microteslas (µT). For reference: the Earth's magnetic field is about 30–50 µT, and we live in it constantly. The safe limit for a person in a car, according to international standards, is considered to be 100 µT.
Independent tests, including studies by the German automobile club ADAC and the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), showed that actual measurements at the driver's and passengers' heads record only 0.08–1.3 µT. This is 30–1000 times lower than the Earth's magnetic field.
The maximum that can be measured in the cabin is at the driver's feet (up to 25 µT during acceleration). But even this is 4 times lower than the safe threshold of 100 µT, comparable to a hairdryer (15–20 µT) or an electric shaver (up to 50 µT).
The fear of electromagnetic radiation from battery-powered cars is a myth born of a misunderstanding of physics. The real risks in the city are air quality and dust from tires and brake pads, not fields that are weaker than those from household appliances, and certainly safer than the natural magnetic field of our planet.
As the expert notes, no certified electric vehicle or hybrid emits dangerous radiation in the cabin — all of them comply with standards with a huge margin. According to German researchers, the level of electromagnetic exposure in electric vehicles is even lower than in many internal combustion engine vehicles, due to the absence of a powerful generator and starter.
