Innovative Rails for Speeds up to 400 km/h to be Created at SKIF Synchrotron

"Evraz" to Utilize the "Engineering Materials Science" Station

PAO "Evraz", Russia's leader in the production of railway infrastructure elements, plans to use the experimental stations of the SKIF Shared Use Center to develop new alloys and rails with improved mechanical and operational characteristics.

After the facility is launched, specialists will be able to conduct dynamic studies – observing in real-time how the material behaves during production and what changes occur under loads close to operational conditions. The use of synchrotron methods will allow studying the formation of material structure and its degradation processes. The company expects this to accelerate the creation of fundamentally new rails for high-speed mainlines.

Russia is implementing the federal project "Development of High-Speed Railway Mainlines", which involves deploying a network of lines for trains with speeds up to 400 km/h. Such tasks will require new approaches to studying material structures and their production processes. Experimental station 2-1 "Engineering Materials Science", planned for implementation as part of the second phase of the SKIF Shared Use Center, could become a key tool. The construction of the synchrotron was completed in June 2026.
