Russian Tractors Hit a Wall with Engines Over 180 HP and Obstacles from China

The share of imported engines in the cost of agricultural machinery reaches 55%

Russian agricultural machinery manufacturers have encountered an unexpected localization limit. Even with a high level of domestic components, the most powerful machines still depend on imported engines, reported the information agency "Zerno On-line".

The share of imported engines with a capacity of over 180 hp in the cost structure reaches 45–55%.

Meanwhile, in the segment of tractors with a capacity of 150–250 hp, the localization level is already 65–75%. The problem is particularly noticeable with high-power equipment and complex combines, where there are not yet enough domestic engines of the required power.

The second bottleneck remains electronics. Imported electronic control units and sensors account for 60–70% of the cost, and about 90% of the microelectronics used come from China.

Delivery times for Chinese hydraulics and electronics have increased, and prices have risen by 15–20%. Furthermore, in 2026, there were cases of software restrictions imposed by Chinese suppliers for equipment exported to Russia.

Rostselmash itself is clearly not in a position for new investments right now. The company's co-owner, Konstantin Babkin, stated that the enterprise would try to at least bring already launched projects to fruition.
