In Russia, carjackings and car thefts have become less frequent. In the first half of 2026, the Ministry of Internal Affairs registered 2.18 thousand vehicle thefts – 12.9% less year-on-year. The number of carjackings without intent to steal decreased even more significantly – by 19.7%, to 3.65 thousand cases.

Experts attribute the decline primarily to the development of urban cameras and anti-theft systems. In large cities, it is increasingly difficult to covertly move or dismantle a car: routes fall under video surveillance, and suitable industrial zones for dismantling are becoming fewer. Insurers add another factor – it has become more difficult to export and sell stolen cars abroad.

In some regions, the decline is even more noticeable. In the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, the number of vehicle thefts decreased by 38.2%, in the Irkutsk Oblast by 29%, and in the Zabaykalsky Krai by 18%. In Moscow, according to Sergey Sobyanin, since 2010, the number of car thefts has decreased 47-fold.

At the same time, criminals' preferences are changing. Insurance companies are increasingly encountering thefts of trucks and vans, including Gazel Next and FAW. The share of popular Chinese models is also growing – among them Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max, Geely Monjaro, and Haval Jolion. According to insurers, in the first half of the year, there were already more thefts of insured Chinese cars than domestic ones.
