Hornet found vulnerable to electronic warfare: Russian military found a way to jam drone control

Features of the drone's antenna system forced specialists to change the settings of electronic warfare equipment

The control of the Hornet drone can be suppressed by electronic warfare means — Russian specialists have found a way to increase the effectiveness of electronic warfare after studying downed aircraft. This was reported by a serviceman of the special police regiment with the call sign Gocha.

During the analysis of several drones, specialists discovered two control antennas installed on the wings. According to the serviceman, they use horizontal polarization, while the antennas of some electronic warfare systems are vertically oriented. Because of this, the standard signal suppression scheme works less effectively.

Specialists are already adapting equipment taking into account the Hornet's design: changing the position of antennas and selecting suitable frequencies. According to Gocha, there are downed aircraft whose control was successfully suppressed, and the results obtained are currently being studied.

Hornet is a fixed-wing aircraft-type drone. Earlier, Russian sources reported that the device is equipped with an optoelectronic guidance system and can use elements of autonomous target recognition. The results of the analysis of downed specimens allow specialists to refine methods of countering this type of UAV.
