Russia has updated its only low-floor tram for meter-gauge tracks. The new "Korsar" was presented at the F. A. Pirotsky Nevsky Electric Transport Plant (PK TS) in St. Petersburg. Trams with this track width are preserved in only three cities in the country – Kaliningrad, Pyatigorsk, and Yevpatoria.
The first version of "Korsar" began operating in Kaliningrad in 2022. At that time, 16 such cars entered city routes.
In the updated version, the bogie design has been improved. This is expected to make the ride smoother. A quick-release false board, i.e., the cladding in the lower part of the body, has also been added. It was designed to speed up maintenance and repair.
The tram received a new front-end design, a more comfortable cabin, and an updated control panel. The equipment also includes the "Antison" driver condition monitoring system, an additional air conditioning system, a new route display, and double-sided information screens.
The number of seats has also increased – 31 instead of 29. The tram will be able to carry up to 177 passengers.
Only one copy of the updated "Korsar" 71-921 has been assembled so far. It will be sent for testing in Pyatigorsk. After testing, a decision will be made on serial production. If required, the plant is ready to supply dozens of such trams to the customer.
St. Petersburg Vice-Governor Kirill Polyakov noted that the new car can be used not only in Russia – it also has export potential.
