Modernized Soviet S-125 "Pechora" anti-aircraft missile systems will continue to perform operational tasks as part of the Indian Air Force until the new Project Kusha air defense system appears. The Indian military expects to use the upgraded complexes as an active element of air defense during the transitional phase.
According to IDRW, this refers specifically to the digitally modernized versions of the "Pechora". After the upgrade, the complexes retain their place in India's air defense system and will not be immediately decommissioned.
For the Indian Air Force, this means the continued service of Soviet equipment in an updated form. Digital modernization allows the S-125's operational capabilities to be maintained and used until Project Kusha can take over the relevant tasks.
During the modernization, the "Pechora" was converted to digital electronics. Specialists modernized the target tracking equipment, transmitter, and receiver path, replacing outdated tube and transistor elements with a modern component base. The operators' cabin was equipped with new displays, data collection systems, and equipment status monitoring, and some mechanical units were restored or replaced.
The Soviet S-125, created back in the USSR, continues to be in demand in India after its digital upgrade.
