The Russian Space Systems (RKS) holding (part of Roscosmos) has begun developing instruments for the new Elektro-L No. 6 and No. 7 hydrometeorological satellites. At the same time, preliminary design work is underway for the next-generation spacecraft — the Elektro-M series, which will eventually completely replace the existing constellation and expand its capabilities.
On August 6, 2026, the Elektro-L No. 5 satellite, launched into geostationary orbit at an altitude of about 35 thousand km back in February, was put into operation. Now, the constellation consists of four spacecraft — No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5. At the same time, two satellites — No. 5 and No. 3 — are simultaneously operating at 76° East longitude, which enhances observation of the Eastern Hemisphere.
Unlike systems using thousands of low-orbiting spacecraft, Elektro-L operates in geostationary orbit. This allows one satellite to observe vast territories and remain stationary relative to Earth. Therefore, Elektro-L solves meteorology and monitoring tasks, rather than high-speed internet.
The Russian constellation allows for almost continuous monitoring of cloud cover, ocean conditions, and ice cover. Current and archived images are publicly available and can be used by scientific institutions, rescuers, and citizens. Roscosmos does not rule out that Elektro-L No. 3 may be moved in the future to 14.5° West longitude, where No. 2, which has already exceeded its design life, is currently operating.
